Crochet rug patterns tutorial: The play rug, which its attachments of rings, balls, and other playthings, and border of many colored animals, is for baby's use on the piazza or nursery floor.

It measures 1 3/4 yards long by 1 1/4 yards wide and each animal block in the border measures 9 inches square. The center of the rug is crocheted in black, the blocks are in red outlined in blue, and theanimals are worked in cross stitch in tans, greens, browns, etc. If desired, dark brown may be used for the center of the rug instead of black.

Crochet rug patterns Materials: Corticelli Knitola Fingering Yarn. 10 balls back, 6 balls Cardinal, 1 ball Delft blue. One no.7 crochet hook.

For the animals in cross stitch only a small quantity of each color is needed and the odds and ends in the workbasket may be used.

Instructions:

Center: In black, make a chain 38 inches long, work in s.c. for 24 inches, taking up both sides of stitch.

Squares for border: With red make 20 blocks 7 inches square, chain 7 inches, work in plain Afghan stitch for 7 inches. Join each square together with Brier stitch in blue and join to center with same, 3 blocks on the narrow side with 1 block at each end joined on to the red blocks of the long side, and 5 7-inch blocks on the 38-inch side.

Edge: With blue, 1 s.c., * ch. 6, fasten back into 2d st. of chain with sl.st. ch.1, 1 s.c. into 3d st. of work; repeat from *. Cross stitch in color on each square any pattern desired.
