History of Crochet
-
The history of crochet can be dated back to 1800 where evidence of the craft
was found, along with books published showing how to crochet along with patterns.
The earliest written reference that we know of was noted in "The Memoirs
of a Highland Lady", written by Elizabeth Grant in 1812. Prior to this
date, although something similar to crocheting was found, no historian can agree
that it even existed.
One writer, Donna Kooler gives a good argument as why crocheting suddenly came
into existence in the early 1800's. It began with the Industrial Revolution
where cotton thread by spun by machines and it made it become more widely available
and easier to attain - not to say anything about making it less expensive as
well. And as crocheting is well suited to cotton and uses larger amounts of
it, when you compare it to other textile productions, it gave birth to a new
craft. Well, that's the theory anyway. It may have existed was before that.
We know for sure that what opened the gates of popularity was Mlle. Riego de
la Branchardiere, who had a talent for taking bobbin lace designs and turning
them into crochet patterns. This ability allowed others to copy her designs
to create and enjoy the masterpieces in their own homes.
Crochet began to be used as a substitute for other forms of lace - less costly,
although it consumed more thread than woven bobbin laces, it was faster to make
and easier to teach.
We know that the word 'crochet' comes from the Middle French word for hook
(croc or crochet). Being similar to knitting (where knitting is a much older
craft), the differences lie in that where knitting you use two needles and crocheting
you use a hook. Also with crocheting only one loop is active at one time. Crochet
enthusiasts also state that crocheting is a much easier craft to concur by the
beginner
